If you live in a tropical country, i guess the best time to visit Las Vegas is in Oct, in which the temperature falls within a comfortable range: 15°C - 28°C. Despite the thick jacket which i had used as a shield against the strong chilly wind, I had to wear multiple layers: (i) long john (ii) T shirt (iii) a cotton jacket (iii) a wool jacket (iv) waterproof jacket and a (v) hand warmer. You will never go wrong by choosing to go layers.

Yet, the chilly wind does not dampen the mood for a night stroll along the buzzling streets, well lit architectures and partying individuals.

Cute Chinese Baby Gal to brighten up the day

Wanted to have a good bellagio buffet but the queue was so damn long!

Ended up having loads of fun in the hotel which looked like a museum

 Foresty

And we got married officially in LV!

And managed to get a job here too

Who dares to swim in this temperature?

Ended up having Mac's. We were really hungry!

Sephora

The Gondola

Listen to the Gondoliers sing while u soak in the sights:

Look at the brave lady in a tube at 4 degree celcius!!!

Garfield was drunk when we got home.

Catch for the day: Sephora

I love their bronze eye liner :D

The undiscovered LV

Time was not on our side as we reached LV in the evening. Hence, there was pretty little time left for some decent exploration and understanding of the mysterious city. It was only when i came home that i realised there were so much more to experience, enjoy and have wonderful memories of:

(A) Rides

Be sure that you catch these rides. They are located at the roof top of the hotels.

(B) Broadway Musicals

Check out the musicals playing here: http://www.las-vegas.cc/shows-entertainment.php?gclid=CK-XsMf3sp4CFZAtpAod8RuGog

Heard that tix are cheaper if you get them last min. Fret not. I have verified that for u. In accordance to http://www.cheaptickets.com/cheap-travel/travel-tips-five-ways-broadway-tickets.shtml you can get cheaper tix by:

(i) Winning the lottery
(ii) Getting rush tix (yea! proven by my peers who stayed in the US)
(iii) Becoming a member
(iv) Bringing a minor
(v) Going off broadway

Alright, i guess (ii) works best for tourists with some time to spare and no kids to brag of.

Transportation in LV

</div>
Stayed in Riveria and major attractions like the bellagio, MGM, Mirage, Venetian are within walking distance. However, there are monorail, trams to take you around. Limos from US$51.95 as i read from a website. Check this guide out! http://off2vegas.com/transit.html. Its informative and i wanna give the author credit.

More day view of Las Vegas in the next post. Stay tuned! =)

Woke up at 6am today and embarked on the journey to Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon. The highlight of the day was supposed to be Grand Canyon, but, be assured that the Hoover Dam is a beauty as well.
Sunrise

Sunrise abroad always seem to be more captivating.

The coach was our home as we were always on the travel. Every minute on the road was always a treat. If the coach is a home, the following are the wallpaper that covered the home:

Finally, Hoover Dam came into sight.

Hoover Dam

Adapted from wikipedia:

Hoover Dam, originally known as Boulder Dam, is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Arizona and Nevada. When completed in 1935, it was both the world's largest electric-power generating station and the world's largest concrete structure. It was surpassed in both these respects by the Grand Coulee Dam in 1945. It is currently the world's 35th-largest hydroelectric generating station.[3]

This dam, located 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada, is named after Herbert Hoover, who played an instrumental role in its construction, first as the Secretary of Commerce and then later as the President of the United States. Construction began in 1931 and was completed in 1936, more than two years ahead of schedule. The dam and the power plant are operated by the Bureau of Reclamation of the U.S. Department of the Interior. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981, Hoover Dam was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1985.[2][4]

Lake Mead is the reservoir created behind the dam, named after Elwood Mead, who oversaw the construction of the dam.

Familiar?

Now, doesn't the following pic looks familiar already? Well, the 1st thing i said to Miss C was "I saw this place before! Transformers!

That was our short encounter at the HOoVer DaM as we were on the road again, to the next beauty, Grand Canyon.

Grand Canyon - West

Adapted from Wikipedia:

The Grand Canyon is a massive rift in the Colorado Plateau that exposes uplifted Proterozoic and Paleozoic strata, and is also one of the six distinct physiographic sections of the Colorado Plateau province. The Grand Canyon is unmatched throughout the world for the vistas it offers to visitors on the rim. It is not the deepest canyon in the world — Cotahuasi Canyon (11598 feet or 3535 m) and Colca Canyon (10499 feet or 3200 m), both in Arequipa, Peru, and Hells Canyon (7,993 feet or 2436 m) on the Oregon-Idaho border, are all deeper — but Grand Canyon is known for its overwhelming size and its intricate and colorful landscape. Geologically it is significant because of the thick sequence of ancient rocks that are beautifully preserved and exposed in the walls of the canyon. These rock layers record much of the early geologic history of the North American continent.

Noted that i added a 'West' behind Grand Canyon?

Yeap, in accordance to the tour guide, the West side boasts itself of the Skywalk and helicopter rides. As such, paid a whopping USD 179 for the trip to the West and a helicopter ride. Paid another USD 50 for the skywalk. Any regrets? NO! Just see how we have enjoyed ourselves. My advice is, never scrimp when it comes to scenery. PS: The journey to the West Canyon is 4 hrs as compared to 8 for the South.

The Canyon Jeep

The Canyon Jeep on its way up to the Grand Canyon

Certification on Miss C, certifiying her eligible for the front seat of the helicopter:

Entertaining ourselves while we waited for the helicopter ride.
(PS: we were 10th in line)

Spotted the snow? Apparently, there was a snow storm a few days before we arrived. The Canyon was closed to tourists and we were really blessed to be able to catch the 1st day the Canyon was opened!

Batman in action:

Sheer boredom

Did i tell you my Granny stays on the Canyon and she took the ride with me?
(nah... one of the granny we went on the trip with. She's really cool. Kept questioning the tour guides.)

The Canyon from the helicopter:

Look at the lanscape!!!!!

Landed somewhere to take a boat ride along the river.

Watch out for the rocks in subsequent pics!
They change color when sun rays hit on them. That's the beauty of the Canyon.
How amazing mother nature is!

Freedom~

Miss C the SweetHeart

Awwwww............ I just love Canyon!

The friendly boatman and his tipping bottle:

I swear i didn't add the sparkle in the pic below. For no reason, my windbreaker had started to sparkle in pics. Perhaps i am already sparkling with happiness! I'm simply a landscape person.

Rock-climbing:

Cliff-Jumping:

Sun-Tenting:

I love the pain on Miss C's face:

Someone send me back to the Canyon pls....

Our lunch for the day: Fried chicken. Didn't have the time to sit down and enjoy the lunch as much time was spent waiting for the helicopter ride and going for the Skywalk (PS: we were not allowed to take pics on the Skywalk. For more info, pls google on the Skywalk. Seriously, nothing special abt the Skywalk. You can save on that if you intend to go. In essence, its just walking on a glass bridge and looking down at the Canyon, for USD 50)

Speaking about the fried chicken, we actually had to smuggle it up the jeep as no food was allowed. Shh.... keep the secret between u n me! =)

Had to balance the plastic container on my lap while the Z monster attacked me on the Jeep. By the time i woke up, the container was on the floor. Heh.. no worries, coming from a 'fine'country, i picked the container up dilligently.

That marks the end of our jouney to the Grand Canyon.

As usual, happy days are always sunny days:

I LOVE GRAND CANYON!!!
America

When i read travel books, the 1st section that i always turn to is the 'History' section. From there, i decide what i shall see, what i want to register in my mind and what i am going to do / eat. Hence, i'm gonna reorganise the way i am writing from this blog post onwards, to tell you more abt the place and how it relates to the real life. The experts do better at explaining so on and off, i'll adapt some on-hand info about the place for ya.]

Las Vegas, Nevada

Adapted from wikipedia:
Las Vegas (Spanish: The Meadows) is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Nevada, the seat of Clark County, and an internationally renowned major resort city for gambling, shopping, and entertainment. Las Vegas, billed as The Entertainment Capital of the World, is famous for the number of casino resorts and associated entertainment. A growing retirement and family city, it is the 28th most populous city in the United States with an estimated population by the U.S. Census Bureau of 603,093 http://www.lvrj.com/news/12144671.html as of 2008.[1] The estimated population of the Las Vegas metropolitan area as of 2007, was 1,986,146.[2]

Established in 1905, Las Vegas officially became a city in 1911. With the growth that followed, at the close of the century Las Vegas was the most populous American city founded in the 20th century (a distinction held by Chicago in the 19th century). The city's tolerance for various forms of adult entertainment earned it the title of Sin City, and this image has made Las Vegas a popular setting for films and television programs. Outdoor lighting displays are everywhere on the Las Vegas Strip and are seen elsewhere in the city as well. As seen from space, the Las Vegas metropolitan area is the brightest on Earth.[3]

The name Las Vegas is often applied to unincorporated areas that surround the city, especially the resort areas on and near the Las Vegas Strip. This 4 mile (6.5-km) stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard is partly in the Las Vegas city limits, but mainly in the unincorporated communities of Paradise and Winchester, and continues partly into unincorporated Enterprise.

Leaving Los Angeles for Las Vegas

Los Angeles was a whole lot of fun with Universal Studio and Disneyland. Other than the fore-mentioned theme parks, i suppose it might be a bit (i emphasize on 'a bit') boring for the advernture seeking tourists. Beverly hills was quiet around 10pm and the streets were empty after 10pm. Perhaps it was the Christmas day which set the serenity. I don't know. But what awaits us is nothing but vibrancy and excitement immersed in the total beauty of a desert. Las Vegas, Nevada. Here we come!

Above: I love this pic. In life, what lies ahead is nothing but uncertainty. Yet, there are many routes to the same destination. Which is your route?

Above: Well spaced stores are abundant in the States. Unlike Asia with limited geographical area, the supermarts here are single floored with spacious carparks which you can hold a circus on.

Above: The journey to Las Vegas was a treat. Beautiful landscape, with the sun rays penetrating through the coach windows. "The world is so big, problems are indeed too small for us to think about." was the only thought that ran through my mind for the 3 hrs journey. What greeted us ahead, was more of the landscape that I will never forget:

Sunrise

Finally, reached the Tanger Outlet:

The Tanger Outlet houses a few brands: Coach, Guess, Samsonite, Kenneth Cole, Nine West, American Eagle and many more. Yet, it was nowhere close to the premium outlets that Miss C was expecting as there was no Kate Spade which she had been looking forward to. I'm not a shopaholic, and the Tanger Outlet was more than sufficient. =)

Miss C's bags on the coach:

Miss C's catch for the day:

For me? Well, spent between US$500 - US$ 1K on boots, sunglasses, bags, watched, wallets and gifts for family and friends.

Guess what, we skipped lunch for shopping! And what last us for lunch was the leftover cheesecake which we bought in Los Angeles and the apple juice which ZC packed for us. See, Miss C is touched !

Moving on to Las Vegas!

Adapted from wikipedia:
Las Vegas is situated on the arid desert floor within Clark County. Correspondingly, the surrounding environment is dominated by desert vegetation and some wildlife, and the area can be subject to torrential flash floods. Enabling the rapid population expansion was a major addition to the city's sewage treatment capacity. The sewage treatment expansion resulted from a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grant funded 2008 programs to analyze and forecast growth and environmental impacts through the year 2019.

The city is in an arid basin surrounded by dry mountains. City elevation is around 2030 feet (620 m) above sea level. The Spring Mountains lie to the west. As befits a desert, much of the landscape is rocky and dusty. Within the city, however, there are a great deal of lawns, trees, and other greenery. Due to water resource issues, there is now a movement to encourage xeriscapes instead of lawns. Another part of the water conservation efforts include scheduled watering groups for watering residential landscaping. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 131.3 square miles (340.0 km2), of which 131.2 square miles (339.8 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2) of it (0.04%) is water.

I am so amazed that Las Vegas was once like this (taken on our way to LV)!

And how it was transformed by human technology to this!

Gosh. Isn't it amazing?

We finally set foot in Las Vegas.

The day view of Las Vegas is entirely different at night. At night, the mysterious and romantic feeling sets in unknowingly, creeping into me and affecting me to a great extent.

It was cold no doubt, and i had on my thickest windbreaker. My hands were never out of my pocket and my smiles froze.

And Miss C, become Miss blue riding hood:

The Venetian

I once rode past the Venetian in Macau when construction works were still on-going. And my reaction was "Wow" and "What is this building?". Never had i thought that i would be here visiting the Venetian in Las Vegas then. When i looked at the stopped works along the Cotai Strip, i felt a tinge of regret for its project owners. Such a pity i thought.

Lovers enjoying a romantic ride with vocal singers

The man rowing the boat can sing as beautifully as those in the theatre! (oops, speaking from a layman's point of view!)

If i live in Las Vegas, i'll imagine myself living in Europe. Who can resist placing onself in pictures like this:

Lightings are generous in Las Vegas. Just like extravagance.

It was a short and cold night. It didn't take us long to realise that Las Vegas is too big for us to complete by foot. And not long before we realise we didn't have our lunch.

Miss C was too hungry waiting for Danny's that she made herself at ease with the menu:

I've never had so much satisfaction from cranberry jucie. Serious.

At Rivera, our hotel for the next 2 days:

In Las Vegas, every little detail spells cash. The more generous your hotel is in spending on shows, rides and fountains, the better is your hotel's occupancy rates. Look at how bellagio has won many with this beauty:

The fountain show is on every 1 hour, with the songs like My heart will go On by, Time to say Goodbye  etc. The one i caught was "I hope you don't mind" and i really didn't mind spending time watching! Right now as i watched the fountain show on YouTube, i can still remember vividly how my heart ached when i was watching the show. PS: I wished i had someone special with me then!

Kimmy's Rattles:

I love Universal Studio! Perhaps with more people, rides and queues appear less lonely.
Missed out the studio tour which is the highlight of the Universal Studio.

I heard, the studio tour brings you to the actual scenes of Desperate Housewives and flooding scenes where water gushes down to your tram but only reaches your feet !

Time to say goodbye to Mr C and ZC...

I wish there are with us throughout the tour!

Los Angeles Day 2 - Disneyland

America
Part 2: Los Angeles - Disneyland 26th Dec 08

[Map courteousy of : http://www.anaheimoc.org/Articles/Archive/Webpage10146.asp]

[Adapted from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orange_County,_California:]
Orange County is a in SouthernCalifornia, United States. Its county seat is Santa Ana. The state of California estimates its population as of 2008 to be 3,121,251, making it the third most populous county in California, behind San Diego County.county

The county is famous for its tourism, the home of such attractions as Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm, as well as several beaches along more than forty miles of coastline. It is also recognized for its nationally known centers of religious worship, such as Crystal Cathedral, Saddleback Church and Calvary Chapel. It is often portrayed in the media as an affluent and politically dynamic region.

Whereas most population centers in the United States tend to be identified by a major city, there is no defined urban center to Orange County. It is mostly suburban, except for some traditional downtown areas such as that of Santa Ana, Huntington Beach and Fullerton. While Santa Ana serves as the governmental center of the county, Anaheim is the main tourist destination and Irvine is the major business hub. Four Orange County cities have populations exceeding 200,000: Santa Ana, Anaheim, Irvine, and Huntington Beach.

Thirty-four incorporated cities are located in Orange County; the newest is Aliso Viejo, which was incorporated in 2001. Anaheim is the oldest, incorporated in 1870 when the region was still part of neighboring Los Angeles County.

Breakfast was a bang! Bringing you... TEA! (haha tea with honey, you don't get that in Singapore!)

Two Cube

Forgot the actual name of the dish, but remembered calling it 2 cube as it was twice the serving for everything on the plate. Who ordered? The 4ever hungry Miss Chewy !

Senior Omelette

The best thing about LA is the care and concern the people have for the elderly. And hence, menus would usually have special (lower) prices for them. Looking for something soft and warm, i ordered the Senior Omelette, not realising that it was a dish for seniors only! Gosh, I can still remember the grin the waitor gave me! Well, as per what Mr V said, I'm the only one who had the chance to have senior omelette when i am not a senior yet! Yea!

Owning only 1 park entrance ticket, we did not know what danger awaits us.. And following the above pic..

We ended up in Adventure Park!

And happily taking pictures....

More pictures....

Until we realised it was not as dreamy as we thought Disneyland would be...

And TaDa!!! We finally realised we were in the wrong park. And so, we started to come up with excuses like: (i) Kimmy fainted cos she was too sad that she got into the wrong park, can you pleeeeeeease let us in? (ii) It has always been our childhood dream to visit disneyland.. can you let us in pleeeease.. (with teary eyes).

And.. so... we went to the entrance to request for a swop. This Czech lady served us, and not only did she made us feel at home, she managed to let us through into disneyland. Gosh.. My marketing lectures / textbooks didn't fail me. Disneyland did bring happiness to people!

And so, the real dream began...

Pirates of the Carribean Ride

A visit to the Disneyland would definitely mean fireworks. This time, the theme was "Remember dreams come true". The weather wasn't really fantastic to begin with, and hence we had a few announcements pre-warning us that the fireworks will be cancelled. Though it didn't materialise, the fireworks merely went on for 10 mins as the weather deteriorated. Well.. it's ok.. luckily we have YouTube!

Remember dreams come true - Part I

Remember dreams come true - Part II

And the fireworks mark the end of the day...

Not forgetting 2nd round of BriDgE back in the hotel with Mr V and ZC.

This time round, 3 of us kept asking "Who is the partner?", "What's the trumph?", "Got trumph or not?". I guess, we all had a pretty tiring, but fun day.

Zonk~~~~

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kimmy's Rattles:

Sorry, can't help but wanna mention racism again!

This time at Disneyland, this lady refused to acknowledge my existence when i said "Hi, Excuse me" 5 times consecutively in her face to request for a photo taken. Tsk Tsk.... How polite.

Ignorance aside.

Its the 2nd time i visited disneyland. The 1st time was in Hong Kong. If you ask me, I would say HK's disneyland trip was definitely more memorable. Perhaps owing to the fact that i was there for the 1st time and 1st impressions are definitely more vivid! Perhaps, it was the fireworks, as i prefer the dreamy feel at HK's Cinderella castle, rather than the theme "remember dreams do come true".

Right now, i feel super accomplished! As this post took me 4 hrs! Kudos to contributors of the YouTube Videos~~ U rock!

Part 1: Los Angeles CI 6 - Spot it on the board!

Hello~~~ Los Angeles (LA)!!!!!!!

PS: Excitement aside, the 4 hr flight to Taipei, 4 hrs of transit and 12 hrs of flight to LA took half of my life away.

25 th Dec 08 (US timezone) -
Arrived at Anaheim Wyndham Hotel

Seriously, the most special thing about this hotel is the unfriendly hotel staff and the promises by them which were never delivered (this staff called Christine/Christina promised to call back when i merely want to check if my fren has arrived from San Diego, but she didn't). The small bolster that reads "Rest Well" couldn't really entice me to rest well cos my friend Mr Chua has not arrived yet. Don't go there despite testimonials from people say that you can view Disneyland Fireworks from there, if you are looking for good service.

Finally, Mr Chua and friend ZC came knocking an hr later:

Off we go, enjoying our 1st meal in LA - iHop.

Pigs in the blankets

Pork sausages wrapped with pancakes. Blueberry, Maple, Original or Strawberry syrup for you Sir?

Bill: USD 6.99 (pigs in the blanket), USD 1.99 for unlimited refill of iced mocha. Excluding serivce tax (around 8%) and tips. You do the math.

At iHop, kids eat free:

Since it was Christmas, there were limited restaurants and outlets opened for us to immerse ourselves in, ZC drove us in his convertible to the Sunset Beach! And gosh, it was chilly~ Brr~~

Sunset beach

Look at how the palm trees sway with the wind and you'll know how strong the wind was that day. These trees are as common in the US as raintrees in Singapore. I heard, these trees are grown in the US as they have deep roots and are able to hold themselves deeply to the ground even when hurricane strikes, explaining for their presence in the US.

Dinner - Jack in the Box

From left (clockwise) : Egg notch, cinnamon roll, chicken pieces, onion rings, fries, chicken wrap, some capsicum fried together with cheese.

The last item was mouth savouring (at least for me and Mr Chua), but a bit spicy and eventually left a salty and hot after-taste. For a moment, i thought i was in Little India having Bryani.

Humongous onion ring!

As mentioned, there wasn't pretty much to do on Christmas day, as many of the stores were closed. Drove around and chanced upon a grocery shop, much to our delight, to grap a few drinks and chips, and our entertainment for the next 3 days --> poker cards.

Cherry Wheat Sameul Adams

Tastes like 枇杷膏!

Christmas day, chilled beer, chips and bridge and good company end the 1st day in LA. Not to mention we had a couple of rounds of heart attack and blackjack.

Good night!

And so, the 4 of us slept like our breakfast, pigs in the blankets...

Kimmy's rattle:
Owing to the time difference, we set off at 6am SG Time Christmas day, and reached LA on its Christmas day too! Effectively, we had 2 Christmases. Cool~~ Upon arrival in LA, was interrogated by the custom officer who asked a dozen of questions which at least to me, 20% bear no relevance to my visit to the USA:

1. How long have you stayed in SG?
2. How long have you studied in SG?
3. Do you understand English?
4. Do you study English in SG?

My ans to his questions:
1. 24 yrs.
2. 19 years?
3. Yes. (duhz, i answered your qns in English)
4. Yes! (duhz, i answered your qns in English!)

So much for being a free country. Did i mention he threw my passport on the table? Please! You are in a recession and Asians are there to spend money. Tsk Tsk. Buck up, young man. My advice is, you never know if any Asian royalty is on the travel.

Despite the hilarious encounter, i still pretty much enjoyed my day in LA. Grateful for Mr Chua's and ZC's presence. Can you imagine how bored we will be if there are nowhere to go but stay in the hotel and watch TV?

Watch out for other rude encounters in subsequent rattles!

Ride with Me!

Ride with me

There are countless travel blogs to begin with, and if you are reading mine, it means that

1. You are truly my friend!;
2. You heard about my blog from #1;
3. You are googling on somewhere to go with a key word that matches one of the places i went to; or
4. Simply someone who is trying hard to find something to read on LJ.

It doesn't really matter which category you fall into, cos we have a common interest nevertheless: (i) Travelling or (ii) Reading (erm.. including strangers' blog).

This travel blog was set up owing to limited hard disk space in Kimmy's tiny puny little brain and Kimmy's love to share good stuff on earth. So in case I am certified senile one day, please go through this travel blog with me patiently. But I doubt I'll forget these memories since they are too wonderful for anyone to rob them from me!

Warning

Seriously not for the following people :

1. Shopaholics;
2. Shopaholics; and
3. Shopaholics.

And, any personal comments are mere personal comments! C'mon, all of us are subjected to our own dislikes and likings right? So be nice ok! I swear not to laugh at your fetish of smelling your smelly foot!
